I’ve crocheted on and off since my nana taught me many moons ago, just as she taught me the cat’s cradle, that you need cold hands to make shortcrust pastry, and that you can catch the nectar from a hoya plant on your finger and eat it … she taught me to crochet. I still have the granny square throw she made packed away somewhere.
Recently I’ve started to pick it up again, simple things like a chunky throw (which I actually finished and now lives with my partner) and a scarf (which I can’t finish coz I left it alone for so long I’ve forgotten the pattern). For a while I’ve wanted to make a blanket for my bed, one in the colours I hope my redecorated bedroom will be if I ever get around to it. I started with the idea of small rectangles which I could attach together because I need something I can pick up and put down, not something I have to finish a row of 42,056 stitches before I can go to bed. Plus, a blanket is not very portable for making on the move.
Reader - the rectangles didn’t work. They never ended up the same size and I got bored.
Then, someone on Threads mentioned this Granny Square Card Deck of 50 designs which I may like. So I investigated and invested.
This is great. the squares are quick and easy(ish) to do. There’s enough variety that I won’t get bored. And also - it’s all portable. I’m going to need multiple versions of each design so I can take one colour of wool, a couple of the single colour instruction squares, and my hook, and it will all fit in my small bag. I got the box on Friday, it’s now Sunday afternoon and I have done 6 already. Bonus - they are all the same size!
I am learning new techniques/stitches, it’s stopping me from snacking in the evening, and I am finding it quite relaxing.
The downside … the number of squares I’ll have to make in order to get the size of blanket I want. Ah well, I may have it half finished by next autumn, and my bedroom isn’t being redecorated any time soon sadly.
I am looking forward to the day I get so used to it that I don’t have to constantly count and I can let my mind roam free, or even listen to an audio book.
And whenever I am crocheting I feel close to my nana who had such a positive influence on my early days and taught me so much. Miss you Nana ❤️
